After the game was pulled from Steam due to an ongoing legal fight with Nexon, Dark and Darker’s developers decided to go underground, asking players to torrent the latest playtest. Shocking probably no one, that didn’t make for the most logistically sound weekend. “We want to apologize for all the bugs, instability, and hurdles that you had to endure during this playtest,” Ironmace CEO Terence Park posted in the official Discord server today.

The weekend was indeed fraught with hurdles, from the initial torrent download link getting pulled first from Discord and then Twitter, two subsequent hotfixes that were also distributed by torrent, and some lengthy server downtime on Saturday. All that on top of the normal bugs, PvP imbalance, and crashing you’d expect from an online game’s alpha test.

In particular, Ironmace introduced a new map called The Ruins, an outdoor setting much different from the traditional dungeon crawling corridors from the last test, which it says wasn’t quite where it wanted it to be. “In our rush to show off the Ruins map we moved a little too quickly and pushed it out before it was fully ready,” Ironmace said when it issued the weekend’s first…

I really want to take Elon Musk’s claims to be creating “a maximum truth-seeking AI” called “TruthGPT” at face value. I really want this all to come from a place of honesty and integrity and trying to create a better, fairer world. I really want to believe that in whatever form it eventually takes, Musk’s new AI venture will legitimately create “an AI that cares about understanding the universe.”

I’m ready to get on board, but he’s just making it so damned hard.

Especially when the source for this new information comes from a Tucker Carlson interview on Fox News (via TechCrunch). It’s doubly tough when the interviewer, in trailing the interview spot on Fox and Friends, commends Musk’s sense of humour and the fact he doesn’t take himself too seriously then uses this phrase with a straight face:

“People who take themselves too seriously, like Stalin… or Chuck Schumer, make me uncomfortable, and should make us all uncomfortable.”

People have been making a lot of hay about how hard Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree is. I, for one, love it, but I can’t deny that the DLC’s final boss is one of the hardest guys FromSoftware has ever made. And boy, do I feel better about my seven hours of attempts against him after seeing that co-op guardian angel Let Me Solo Her (maybe Him now?) also had a rough go of it before beating him today. Spoilers for Shadow of the Erdtree’s final boss ahead.

Let Me Solo Her had already started no-hitting expansion mid-boss Messmer the Impaler, but Promised Consort Radahn is just in a league of his own. After a two hour boss stream yesterday, Let Me Solo Her finally beat the man after an hour of streaming today.

He took a lot of the same mitigation measures I found myself using, despite also typically preferring fast roll dodgy guys: the signature jar helm is still in place, but otherwise Let Me Solo Her was rocking the super heavy, super tanky new Verdigris armor and a Carian Knight’s Shield to help against Radahn’s beastly, relentless attacks.

Helldivers 2 got its biggest update in months today: the Escalation of Freedom patch adds a new highest difficulty (Level 10), a swamp planet biome, new enemy types, and missions. It’s a great day to return to what is still easily my game of the year so far, but in the loudest corners of the Helldivers 2 community, conversation around today’s update has been dominated by two bullet points in the patch notes. The fan-favorite flamethrower got nerfed, and the subreddit has gone nuclear over it:

• Adjusted flame effects to work more realistically.
• It doesn’t go through various bodies/objects where bounce off would be the expected behavior, like on armors and static objects.

What this means is that the flamethrower’s flames no longer penetrate the thick armor plating on Chargers. That’s a shame, because the flamethrower’s penchant for melting Chargers in seconds was considered one of the best reasons to bring it as your support weapon—its power justified the risk of burning yourself and teammates in the process.

The Children’s Advertising Review Unit (CARU) is a self-regulatory body in the United States, and it’s one that focuses on how things are being marketed to children under the age of 13 across all forms of media. In recent times it’s been looking closely at the metaverse, and issued a compliance warning about this area in August 2022. Now it’s taking aim at Roblox, one of the biggest and most profitable gaming/creation platforms around, and one where 43% of the playerbase is under the age of 13.

CARU has found Roblox in violation of various of its guidelines, and in particular found that how it conducts advertising through paid-for influencers lacked adequate disclosure (thanks, GI.biz). It noted that, even when disclosure may have been present, that did not mean it was made in a way kids would understand.

“CARU found that social media influencers in Roblox’s Influencer Program who had large child audiences did not clearly and conspicuously disclose their material connection to Roblox in their videos in a way children can understand,” said CARU’s statement, “and that influencers in the Video Stars Program who promoted their unique Star Code did not clearly and c…

As we approach the next generation of Intel CPUs (which haven’t been officially announced yet), motherboard manufacturers are doing their best to get ready. Gigabyte calls its new line of Z790 X motherboards the “fast track to Gen X,” promising faster overclocking capabilities, better connectivity, and some welcome DIY updates.

The Taiwanese manufacturer invited me to check some of its upcoming Z790 X motherboards and get hands-on time with the Z790 Aorus Master X, Pro X, and Elite X WiFi 7.

Extracting as much speed as possible from DDR5 RAM seems to be Gigabyte’s big mission here. The redesigned BIOS of the Z790 X will let overclockers increase DDR5 memory frequencies with the help of an auto-boost that will automatically set DDR5 modules to the highest profile, increase bandwidth, and shorten latency, all with one click. The dual-channel DDR5 board will also support up to DDR5-8266+, which is pretty wild.

To heatsink or to not heatsink, that is the question. Okay, that’s a silly question, but it’s a relevant one in this case. And that’s because the Nextorage NEM-PA 2TB is pretty much all the SSD you could ever want. It has very high read and write speeds, and thanks to a large SLC cache and 2GB of onboard DRAM, it can sustain those figures for large data transfers.

So why would you choose the Solidigm P44 Pro 2TB, when its read/write speeds are a little slower and its SLC cache is roughly half the size of the Nextorage? The answer is all to do with where you want to install the SSD.

Gaming motherboards released over the past few years typically sport at least two M.2 slots for NVMe drives and include large metal heatsinks to help prevent the SSDs from hitting any thermal limits and slowing down. While you can use a heatsink-equipped SSD in those slots, you won’t be able to use the motherboard’s own cooling system.

At best, it’ll just spoil the aesthetics of your gaming PC but, at worst, it could also affect the overall storage performance, if those default heatsinks are also used to keep the motherboard chipset cool.

If you’re rocking a handheld gaming PC that isn’t the Steam Deck, then I’ve got some good news for you to start the new year: AMD has released a new preview driver enabling its software-based frame generation tech on any system running an RDNA 3-based integrated graphics chip. 

The Radeon 700M has been added to the list of supported GPUs in the latest AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) preview driver (via Videocardz), and that’s the iGPU at the heart of both the AMD Z1 family of handheld chips and the Ryzen 7 7840U that’s prevalent in pretty much every other handheld PC on the market today.

So, what that also means is that it will be functional on any AMD laptop running that chip, too, such as the Framework 13 with the latest AMD mainboard. But the driver notes do state that if you’re hoping to get AFMF feature working on a laptop which also has a discrete graphics card inside it, you’ll need to make sure that the display is running from the integrated graphics for it to work.
